It’s Tax Season. Do You Qualify for the EITC? If not don’t forget there is free tax filing and preparation for Military Members!!
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a federal tax credit for people whose adjusted gross family income is less than $50,270. Even if you are not required to file based upon your income level, you may receive benefits from this program. For example, if you worked during 2012 and had earned income less than $45,060 ($50,270 if married filing jointly) and if there are three or more qualifying dependent children, you may be eligible for a credit of up to $5,891. Even if you do not have any dependent children and your income is less than $13,980 ($19,190 if married filing jointly), you may be eligible for a credit of up to $475. If you qualify for EITC, you may have your taxes prepared for free by an IRS-certified volunteer at one of many Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) or AARP Tax-Aide sites around the Commonwealth. Call 2-1-1 or visit the 2-1-1 website for assistance finding a free tax prep site near you.
